A Pushcart Prize nominee and two-time winner of the South Carolina Fiction Project, Rachel Luria is an Associate Professor at Florida Atlantic University’s Wilkes Honors College. She is a recipient of a Key West Literary Seminar Teacher and Librarian scholarship and has been an Associate Artist at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Her work has appeared in The Normal School, Harpur Palate, Sport Literate, Saw Palm, Phoebe, Dash Literary Journal, Yemassee, and others. Her work was selected as a Notable Essay of 2015 by the editors of the Best American Essays series. Rachel Luria is also a co-editor of the anthology Neil Gaiman and Philosophy.
Teaching Philosophy:
Henry James defines a writer as someone “on whom nothing is lost.” Whatever her chosen area of study, a student will thrive if she works to become someone who sees the significance in even small moments, who looks closely, thinks critically, and ask questions. For this reason, my classes are designed to challenge students to more actively engage the many puzzles—both personal and professional—that await them and to develop writing and communication that is precise, polished, and thoughtful.
The exercises I choose, readings I assign, and the discussions I lead help my students but they also help me become someone on who nothing is lost. Looking at favorite stories through the young eyes of my students keeps me fresh and helps me discover new truths about writing—both my own and others. I can imagine nothing more important or rewarding and so I write and I teach and I learn.
